Аннотация: The article presents not only theoretical background for the primary production (PP) assessment based on hydrochemical indices, but also numerous examples of the PP assessment for polar waters, upwelling zones, and ultraoligotrophic tropical waters. All advantages of the PP assessment based on hydrochemical parameters are shown, including a better representation and a more thorough assessment of PP in the Wordld ocean.

Аннотация: Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba Dana) is considered a most valuable fishing object in the Antarctic waters. According to some estimates, its stocks totals hundred million tons. Besides, krill makes the basic part of feeding ration for numerous consumers, including sea birds, seals, whales, etc. Hydrochemical conditions in areas of the Antarctic krill concentrations in the Southern Ocean are reviewed. We have identified hydrochemical parameters which allow us to differentiate main water masses in the Antarctic waters (i.e. waters associated Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) vs. water with the high-latitude modification associated with continental seas) and distinguish a zone of their interaction, the Secondary Frontal Zone (SFZ). This zone basically makes the areas of the krill dense concentrations.

Аннотация: The long-term linkages between climatic and oceanic processes in the North Atlantic, North Pacific, South Pacific (SP), and Antarctic waters for the 1950-2012 period have been studied. Based on the revealed relationships between year class strength of mass hydrobiont populations in these regions and climate variations, their state for the next few decades was assessed. In the Northeast Atlantic (NEA), the population of Norwegian spring-spawning herring (NSSH) will possibly be recruited with some strong year classes until the mid-2020s. However, the tendency toward decrease in stock biomass will continue. The biomass of Northeast Arctic cod (NEA cod) will increase, owing to appearance of strong year classes. In the Northwest Pacific, after 2017-2020 there will be two- or threeford (even four- or fivefold, under the present level of poaching) decline of the Asian salmon stocks. The main walleye pollock stocks will increase after 2017 due to appearance of stronger year classes. In the South Pacific, the oceanic horse mackerel population will remain at a low level during the next 15-20 years. The Antarctic krill stocks will grow and become more available for commercial exploitation.

Аннотация: In the Sakhalin-Kuril region, there are two species of Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha and O. keta) that are hatchery-cultured for commercial fishery. We have analyzed the long-term data on numbers of juveniles both migrating from spawning grounds and being released from hatcheries, and their following catches during returns of fishes of the corresponding brood-year populations. The problem of effectiveness of pink salmon culture relatively to the increase in their commercial catches is shown to remain controversial. At the same time, some changes in chum salmon hatchery culture since the 1990s (reconstruction of the operating hatcheries, progress in biotechnology, appearance of new hatcheries with a private property form) have led to a substantial growth of their catches. In the recent years a method of the out-of-hatchery culturing of chum juveniles began to be approbated.

Аннотация: Work on the artificial reproduction of sturgeons began in Russia for almost a century and a half ago which resulted in a certain success. But in the recent two decades after the disintegration of the USSR, followed by the weakening of comprehensive measures on conservation and rational use of sturgeons, they found themselves as endangered species as a consequence of the effect of anthropogenic factors. Their commercial reproduction does not compensate the decline in natural reprodudtion, much less the intensive poaching. Recovery of stugeon stocks up to a level allowed their commercial fishery to be made, provided that the poaching could be eliminated, is only possible through a significant increase in efficiency of industrial sturgeon reproduction. It can be achieved owing to the implementation of the proposed methods which would provide better quality and viability of released juveniles.

Аннотация: This work is based on the materials collected during scientific observation of Commander squids fishery in the waters adjacent the Northern Kuril Islands from 31 May till 18 June, 2014. The study revealed shorterm (10-12 days) cycles of density and composition of squid aggregations. Each phase of the cycle may be characterized by specific density of squid aggregations, sex ratio and maturity stages composition. A hypothesis is provided that this cyclicity appears as a result of migration of spatially structured squid shoals through the fishing ground in the Northern Kuril Islands area.
